Liver: Keep it healthy with these 5 foods
The Liver is above the stomach on the right side, below the heart and lungs and is one of the most important internal organs in the body. Its main functions are digestion and absorption, but also do over 500 others. It’s the largest internal organ and produces different chemicals and enzyme.
Main Functions
- Glycogen storage – When the body is low on energy, it can tapped for supply to the body.
- Protein synthesis – In this process, the biological cells generate new proteins.
- Hormone production
- Red Blood Cell Destruction
- Absorbs lipids and vitamins like A, D, E and K.
Bile Production
The bile is a dark green to yellowish or brown colored fluid produced by the liver. It facilitates digestion of lipids in the small intestines. The bile mainly consists of water salts, bilirubin, cholesterol and other inorganic salts.
Bile is an alkaline substance, produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. It is secreted into small intestines for emulsification of the fats. Another function of bile is to neutralize excess stomach acids preventing entry into the duodenum. Thus, bile salts act as an antibacterial substance and destroy multiple microbes present in the food.
Detoxification
The liver is a gateway to the body and it functions as a cleaner by filtering the unwarranted toxins that enter into our body through food and other sources. As a cleanser, the liver transforms as much ammonia and other metabolic waste, drugs, alcohols and other chemicals as it can. It filters or sieves the dead cells and other particulate debris from the bloodstream. In fact, the toxins are converted into water-soluble substances and released into the kidney for excretion from the body.
Therefore, in order to maintain a healthy body, it is absolutely necessary to maintain healthy food consisting of nutrients, which facilitates the way the liver works.
If you overload the body with more chemicals, toxins, alcohols and such other substances, it has to work ‘overtime’ in the detoxification process. No doubt, excessive work of this organ beyond its capacity may result in the liver not working as well.
In order to ensure a healthy liver, you need to consume more of the following foods to the liver in the cleansing process.
- Dark green leafy vegetable
- Orange color fruits.
- Mustard greens
- Bitter melon
- Broccoli
